Church holiday October 9

The Holy Apostle and the Evangelist John the Theologians was the son of Zebedee and Salome, the daughter of Saint Joseph the Brute. Simultaneously with his elder brother James, he was called by Jesus Christ to be among his disciples on Lake Genesareth. John was especially loved by the Savior for sacrificial love and virgin purity. He was present at the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus by the Lord and witnessed the Transfiguration of the Lord at Tabor. During the last supper, he reclined next to the Lord and, following the sign of the Apostle Peter, leaning into the Savior’s chest, asked about the name of the traitor. John followed the Lord when He, bound, was led from the Garden of Gethsemane to the court, he was under interrogations of the Divine Teacher and relentlessly followed Him along the Cross, grieving with all his heart. At the foot of the Cross, he wept together with the Mother of God and heard the words of the Crucified Lord addressed to Her from the height of the Cross: “Woman, behold your son” and “See your mother” to him. From this time on, the apostle John, as a loving son, cared for the Blessed Virgin Mary and served Her; after Her Assumption, he went to Ephesus and other cities to preach the Gospel, taking with him his disciple Prokhor. They set off on a ship that sank during a violent storm. All travelers were thrown onto the land, only John remained in the depths of the sea. Prokhor sobbed bitterly, having lost his spiritual father and mentor, and went to Ephesus alone. On the fourteenth day of the journey, he stood on the seashore and “saw that the wave threw a man ashore. Approaching him, he recognized the Apostle John, whom the Lord had kept alive for fourteen days in the depths of the sea. They went to Ephesus to preach to the Gentiles about Christ. At this time, the persecution of Christians of the emperor Nero (56-68) began. John was taken to court in Rome, where he was sentenced to death. He drank the cup offered to him with deadly poison and remained alive, then came out unscathed from the boiling oil boiler, which was thrown by order of the torturer. After this, John was banished to the island of Patmos, where he lived for many years and enlightened many people with the light of the Gospel, healing the sick and casting out demons from the idolatrous temples.

One day, John went with Prokhor to a deserted mountain. There, after a three-day fast and fervent prayer of the apostle, the mountain hesitated, thunder rumbled. Prokhor fell to the ground in fear, but John lifted him up and, saying that now the Lord himself would speak with his lips, ordered him to record his speeches. The fact that the Spirit of God announced through the apostle is the Book of Revelation (Apocalypse) of the holy Apostle John the Divine. In this book, the secrets of the destinies of the Church and the end of the world are revealed

After the exile, John returned to Ephesus, where he continued his activities; there he wrote about the year 95 the Gospel. He called on all Christians to love the Lord and each other and thus fulfill the commandments of Christ. Already in extreme old age, having learned about a young man who had lost the true path and made him the leader of a gang of brigands, the apostle John went in search of him into the wilderness. When he saw the holy elder, he began to hide, but the apostle ran after him and begged him to stop, promising to take the young man’s sin, if only he would repent and not destroy his soul. Touched by the warmth of the old man's soul, the young man really repented and corrected his life.

The Apostle John died at the age of more than a hundred years, having survived all the other eyewitnesses of the Lord, long remaining the only living witness of the earthly ways of the Savior. When the time came for the apostle John to go to God, he retired beyond Ephesus with his seven disciples and ordered to prepare for himself a cruciform grave, in which he lay down, telling the disciples to cover him with earth. Pupils kissed their beloved mentor with a cry, but, not daring to disobey, they fulfilled his command. They covered the face of the saint with a plate and buried the grave. Upon learning of this, the rest of the disciples of the apostle came to the place of burial and excavated the grave, but found nothing in it. Every year, from the grave of St. John on May 21 (8), there was a fine dust, which believers collected and healed them from disease. Therefore, the Church celebrates the memory of John the Theologian also on May 21. The Lord gave his beloved disciple and his brother the name of the "sons of thunder" - the messenger of the heavenly fire that was terrifying in its cleansing power. The eagle is a symbol of the high hovering of the Theological Thought - the iconographic sign of the apostle.
