What is materialism?
Materialism is spoken not only in philosophy, but also in everyday life. However, not everyone knows what is meant by this concept. In this article we will look at what materialism is and who such materialists are.
Materialism and materialists
Materialism as a teaching originated in ancient Greece. Then it was called materialistic monism. From the Greek word "monos" - literally "one." To this day, philosophy is usually divided into materialism and idealism. Materialist philosophers, one of whom was Rene Descartes, believed that the basis of human life is the pursuit of material goods. In contrast to the idealists, they sought to prove that the world is essentially an objectively existing reality. Consciousness does not affect matter in any way. The followers of materialism are Voltaire, Newton and other philosophers and scientists.
If the idealists believed that the world could not be known, then the materialists, on the contrary, argued in every way that the world and the universe were knowable, that the laws of nature could be described and predicted.
